1. Whale and Dolphin Watching Paradise - A Morning of Wonders at Sea.

Things to do in Trincomalee

Picture this: You’re nearing the end of sunrise and you’ve boarded a motorboat, taking in the liberating salty air. You’ve paid and collected your tour tickets, and you’re steadily heading out into the Indian Ocean. While it might be cool to know Trincomalee is one of the world’s premier locations to see blue whales and sperm whales, especially during the months of March to May, there is an added bonus of a good chance of being escorted by pods of spinner dolphins, who come leaping along side you, barely meters away from the boat!

The whale and dolphin watching tours normally take around 2 hours, and you are provided with light refreshments, safety equipment, as well as guides who assist spot and identifying marine giants. It is remarkable when your boat has a whale breach next to it; you feel so small in the world, an amazing experience.

2. Pigeon Island National Park – Beneath the Surface Lies a World of Colour

Things to do in Trincomalee

Just a short boat cruise from Nilaveli Beach lies one of Sri Lanka’s greatest marine sanctuaries, Pigeon Island National Park. It’s not simply just an island, it’s a window into the underwater paradise below. Snorkelers and divers experience coral gardens of vibrant colour, schools of tropical fish, and easy-to-spot sea turtles and blacktip reef sharks. Pigeon Island National Park comprises two small islands – one is larger and accessible for walking while the other is relatively rugged, both lying adjacent to living coral reef barriers.

The best time to visit is between the months of March to October when the waters are calmer and clearer. We offer everything from equipment and transport, to local guides who know the best snorkelling places, to help you experience Pigeon Island National Park without worry.

3.Koneswaram Temple and Fort Frederick – a blend of spirituality and history

Things to do in Trincomalee

Perched on top of Swami Rock, with panoramic views over Trincomalee Bay, the ancient Koneswaram Temple is both a sacred place of pilgrimage and a beautiful view.

Dating back to roughly 300 BCE, it was one of the five historical Hindu temples devoted to Lord Shiva and is an important spiritual place for the Tamil people. The temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 17th century and rebuilt later on. The inside of the temple has beautiful detailed statues of the Hindu gods that show both devotion and artistry, while the outside view from the cliff top adds to the dramatic effect. The temple is adjacent to Fort Frederick, which was originally built by the Portuguese and then inhabited by the Dutch and British. Upon entering through the gates of Fort Frederick, walking paths share space with deer grazing around scattered colonial buildings, allowing you to step back into centuries of Sri Lankan history, colliding a faded ancient religion with colonial conquest.

4.Kanniya Hot Springs - Healing Waters of Myth and Memory

The Kanniya Hot Springs, a collection of 7 shallow wells that vary in temperature, is less than a mile outside of town. Legend says that King Ravana struck the earth with his sword to create the hot springs which served as a memorial for his mother’s death. In addition to the oral narrative, it is also an archaeologically significant site owing to the ruins of ancient Buddhist monasteries in the area. As is custom, bathers in the hot springs used buckets to draw the mineral-rich waters, enjoying the therapeutic warmth of the water on their skin.

5.More Than Just Sea Life - Trinco's Old-Fashioned Pleasures

Beyond its highlights, Trincomalee offers so much else, quieter pursuits. For instance, on an early morning visit to the fish market near the jetty, you can witness the rhythm of the town and the way of life for fishermen unloading catches of fresh fish, tuna, snapper and squid while the vendors are shouting the prices over the commotion. Not far away you will also find St Mary’s Cathedral (a fine example of colonial era Catholic cathedral architecture) and the British War Cemetery (a tranquil and well-kept memorial for the soldiers from WWI).

For naturalists, good birdwatching in the lagoons nearby, especially Kokkilai and Ullacalie, is an inviting journey on its own. These wetlands and compiled waterways offered a safe haven for flamingoes, pelicans, herons, egrets and many more species particularly during the migratory seasons. We offer guided walks in these areas, and boat safaris too, to showcase these untouched ecosystems.
