Perched on top of Swami Rock, with panoramic views over Trincomalee Bay, the ancient Koneswaram Temple is both a sacred place of pilgrimage and a beautiful view.
Dating back to roughly 300 BCE, it was one of the five historical Hindu temples devoted to Lord Shiva and is an important spiritual place for the Tamil people. The temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 17th century and rebuilt later on. The inside of the temple has beautiful detailed statues of the Hindu gods that show both devotion and artistry, while the outside view from the cliff top adds to the dramatic effect. The temple is adjacent to Fort Frederick, which was originally built by the Portuguese and then inhabited by the Dutch and British. As is custom, bathers in the hot springs used buckets to draw the mineral-rich waters, enjoying the therapeutic warmth of the water on their skin.
